Resolution Schmesolution
Why do we do this to ourselves every year? I sat here bored over the last few days thinking about what I want to change this year. What I want to do more of, less of, better, or not at all. And I came up with a few that I have the greatest intentions of sticking to. I am trying not to be unrealistic like saying that I am going to train for an iron man triathalon or keep my house spotless all the time. Those things just won't happen. So, my realistic goals (I want to call them goals rather than resolutions because resolutions don't stick, goals are always present) are 1) to do something physically active at least 3 times a week... it's doable 2) to have a date night once a month doing something or going somewhere different or fun 3) to pay off at least one of my student loans. Now those aren't too bad, right. Those are realistic goals to have for the year. I hate the fact that we do this every year in January. Why can't we just decide to set goals at any point during the year and follow through? It's because we don't take them seriously. It is always about a time limit. I will go on a diet on Monday, or I will quit smoking at the end of this pack. Why not just put down the cheeseburger and throw out the cigarettes now? Why not tivo the show, get off the couch and go for a jog? The key is accountability. Pick an accountability partner with the same or similar goals and hold each other to it. Write down your goals, put them on the fridge, and stick to it. I had a manager in college at Outback who sat me down onetime and said that you will never follow through with your goals if you don't write them down. Its all about accountability...
